"Symbolic Card Practices for Self-Care and Burnout Prevention in Jungian Play Therapy and Creative Therapy"

Compassion fatigue and burnout can quietly erode the passion and clarity that originally drew therapists to this work. Whether engaging in child-centered play therapy or creative approaches with adults, therapists need intentional practices that restore energy and emotional presence.

This training offers powerful yet playful, strategies using symbolic card decks to promote self-care and actively insulate against burnout.

Grounded in Jungian theory and trauma-informed principles, participants will leave with adaptable techniques to deepen resilience, maintain therapeutic presence, and nourish their own creative spirit.

Sand Tray Isn't Easily Portable... Therapy Cards Are!

What a FUN and experiential way to learn. In this hybrid training experience, you will ….

🎴 Purchase a deck or two (or more) of cards with symbolic imagery and bring them to class (virtual or in person).

☀️ Resiliency and self care related imagery will have a completely different feel than shadow work and trauma healing.

Some imagery is light hearted and other imagery is bit darker/heavier in it's feel.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this section, participants will be able to:

  • Describe at least three ways image-based card decks can support therapist self-care, reflective practice, and insulation against

    burnout through a Jungian-informed approach.

  • Describe the function of both brain hemispheres and explain therapeutic timing when integrating therapeutic cards in a session.

  • Demonstrate a card-based self-care exercise that can be adapted for use by clients during creative and/or play therapy sessions

to promote emotional regulation, foster resilience, and build internal coping resources.

  • Analyze how Jungian based archetypes, symbolism, and the unconscious contribute to meaningful self-reflection and emotional

replenishment, and apply this understanding to card-based practices that support both therapist and client well-being.

  • Develop a personalized plan for ethically and intentionally integrating symbolic card work into session rituals, closure practices,

and therapist self-care routines to enhance longevity in play therapy and creative therapy work.

  • Recognize early signs of compassion fatigue and burnout through reflective card-based practices, and formulate image-driven

strategies for re-centering and maintaining therapeutic presence in both play therapy and creative therapy work.
