Why Sand Tray?

Sand tray is not only for children. Teens and adults often surprise themselves by what surfaces when they begin placing figures in the sand. Symbolic expression gives them a safe distance to explore overwhelming feelings and a concrete way to see their inner world.

For Therapists, Sand Tray Can Bring:

Depth: Access layers of emotion and memory that words alone cannot touch.

Safety: Provide a non-threatening outlet for clients who feel overwhelmed or “stuck.”

Insight: Help clients see patterns, choices, and possibilities in new ways.

What Makes This Training Different

This is not a theory-heavy lecture. In this workshop, you will:

See real trays step by step:

Watch live sand tray demonstrations with teens and adults so you can observe what sessions actually look like.

Learn what to say:

Get language examples for responding in the moment, so you are never left wondering how to guide the process.

Practice interventions:

Try out at least two adaptable sand tray techniques you can use right away with your own clients.

Understand the brain piece:
Learn how the right and left sides of the brain work together in the sand tray. We will keep the science simple and connect it directly to what you see in session, so it feels clear and usable right away.

You Will Leave With…

A clear framework for introducing sand tray to clients of any age.

Confidence in knowing when a tray could help a client who is shut down or looping.

Practical, adaptable interventions ready to use in your very next session.

A new appreciation for how neuroscience and symbolism create space for healing.

Who This Training Is For

Therapists who work primarily in talk therapy but want creative tools that fit seamlessly into their style.

Play therapists who want to expand their skills with adolescents and adults.

Any clinician who feels that moment of “we are stuck — now what?” and wants a safe, powerful next step.

Learning Objectives

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

Describe how sand tray therapy can enhance depth, safety, and insight in work with teens and adults, even in talk-based sessions.

Identify at least three right-brain processes involved in emotional integration, and explain how these relate to the healing power of sand tray therapy.

Recognize clinical moments when symbolic, nonverbal tools may support clients who are stuck, overwhelmed, or emotionally shut down.

Facilitate at least two sand tray therapy interventions that can be adapted for adult or teen clients in individual therapy.
